"Thirty-five years in corporate America and retirement was knocking at my door. I wanted to start this new chapter in my life trekking El Camino de Santiago, a ancient pilgrim route across northern Spain. My goal was to carry a pack just under 20 pounds and to complete 450 miles averaging 13 miles a day. I was excited, my family and friends were supportive ... but I failed to inform my knees! As I started to train my knees ached and ached. Perhaps they had a different idea of retirement and were revolting after years of distance running. It was off to the orthopedic surgeon who recommended any combination of these; a brace, arthroscopic knee surgery and cortisone shots. I didn't like any of these options. I did additional research and found that strengthening the leg is one of the best ways to beat knee pain. Enter Dragonfly Health and Fitness! Rick and Marni put together a plan, with a personal trainer, to get my legs and body strong enough to make the trek. Dr. Matt helped get me in alignment and worked on my flexibility. I started working-out in January 2015 and was on the Camino in late March. I successfully hiked all 450 miles ... a story for another time! When I returned in May, I wanted to continue with my trainer because the results were so extraordinary. At the beginning of 2016 I made the leap and signed up for CrossFit. At the age of 60 I learned a whole new skill set and vernacular to accompany it. I never thought retirement would include wall balls, snatches, clean jerks and standing on my hands! What fun to work-out with a fantastic group of people and gain strength, flexibility and balance. I couldn't have done any of this without the coaches on my journey; Ruby, Zach, Joshua, Eric, Rick and Marni. One of the reasons I hiked the Camino was to sort out what to do in retirement. I was looking for an epiphany to help me live my golden years. My epiphany never happened on the trail. It was when I got home I realized that I have to live my life like age doesn't matter and the key is to keep moving. Thank-you Dragonfly for helping me to realize this!"
